Does this organic intimate lubricant respect the osmolarity of my vagina?

The YESforLOV seaweed lube takes into account the fundamental fact that it has a direct impact on the cellular health of the vaginal mucosa: osmolarity.

It’s important to know the osmolarity of your intimate lubricant because the cells of the vaginal mucosa are constantly maintaining a balance between the water pressure contained inside the cell and the environment that surrounds it (and therefore your intimate gel).

With a hyper-osmotic intimate lube, the cells of the vaginal membrane will dry out and dilute the lubricant, causing mucosa dehydration, which leads to irritation and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections.

On the other hand, with a hyo-osmotic lube, the cells will try to capture the water contained in the lubricant to rehydrate the tissue, but if it’s too hypo-osmotic, it may cause those cells to burst and die.

With a hyper-osmotic intimate lube, the cells of the vaginal membrane will dry out and dilute the lubricant, causing mucosa dehydration, which leads to irritation and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections. Hypo-osmolar and hyper-osmotic lubricant gels are suspected to increase the risk of HIV and STI transmission and slow down sperm migration and survival.

As a reminder, the perfect osmolarity for sperm survival is about 360 mOsm/kg. The best personal lube would therefore be iso-osmotic, which means that it would have an osmotic pressure equal to that of the vaginal mucosa, and thefore the same level of hydration as the body’s cells. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that intimate lube manufacturers have an osmolarity of at least 32 mOsm/kg and not exceed 380 mOsm/kg to avoid any risk of damaging the vaginal epithelium. Unfortunately, the most well-known lubricant gel brands on the market are often between 2000 to 8000 mOsm/kg while the WHO accepts a maximum of 1200 mOsm/kg.

According to clinical tests conducted by independent laboratories, the YESforLOV natural seaweed lube is isosmotic (160 mOsm/kg), and therefore does not damage the vaginal epithelium and protects the cells from osmotic stress that can create vaginal dryness and discomfort.

Does this NATURAL AND ORGANIC intimate lubricant respect the physiological pH of my vagina?

This natural YESforLOV lubricant with organic seaweed respects the physiological pH of your mucous mem-branes. This means that it has a pH close to that of the intimate area and will not disturb your vaginal flora, which would run the risk of making you experience dysbiosis.

The natural glycerin-free lube preserves the acidity of the vagina and maintains the right balance of vaginal microbiota.

Depending on your menstrual cycle, the pH changes. During the non-fertile period, the vagina pH is rather acidic (3.5-4.5) and during ovulation, it becomes slightly more alkaline and neutral.

The exact pH of the last batch of our production is 4.2.

The vaginal microbiota results from a relatively unstable balance, which can be compromised by several factors including stress, fatigue, and medications.

It is important to mention that according to many infectious disease specialists, it is difficult to be able to prove that the pH of an intimate hygiene product has an impact on the vaginal pH because the vaginal cavity has its own acidity maintenance system.

That being said, we always recommend avoiding lubricants with an alkaline pH above 8.

Is glycerin in intimate lubricants dangerous? Why use seaweed instead?
